Meet Dr. B
Dr. Hassan Bencheqroun
Dr. Hassan Bencheqroun, fondly referred to as Dr. B, is a board-certified pulmonologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and diseases of the lungs.
“Shortly before defending my thesis and graduating from medical school, I was involved in a car accident which nearly claimed my life,” says Dr. Bencheqroun. “Through the days that followed, I was introduced to what it means to wear the patient’s hat, feel the pain, experience the pity in people’s eyes, ask for help, and wait every day for my doctors’ visits to tell me what’s next. That experience would forever affect the way I would treat my patients and their families.”
After recovering from his injuries, Dr. B continued his education in the United States in the study of internal medicine at Wilson Memorial Regional Medical Center at SUNY upstate New York.
He then specialized in both Lung diseases and Critical Care Medicine at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, an affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Bencheqroun further underwent specialized training in interventional pulmonology at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, an affiliate of Harvard University in Boston. There he studied interventional pulmonary disease, performing state-of-the-art minimally invasive lung disease procedures and surgery, lung cancer diagnosis and staging, diagnosing airway obstructions and treating them with minimally invasive technology, and right heart catheterizations for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. B takes a patient-centered approach to care based on his personal experience as a patient. Around the time of his medical school graduation, he survived a severe car crash that required critical care treatment for traumatic brain injury.
“Through the days that followed, I was introduced to what it means to wear the patient’s hat, feel the pain, experience the pity in people’s eyes, ask for help, and wait every day for my doctors’ visits to tell me what’s next. That experience would forever affect the way I would treat my patients and their families,” he said.
Dr. B currently serves patients in San Diego and Palm Springs, California. He has been awarded the Patient’ Choice Award for several consecutive years, and fluently speaks four languages — English, Arabic (native) Spanish and French.
Additionally, he founded his clinical research firm called RESPIRE Clinical Research which works to help ease the often complicated clinical trial process by connecting doctors and patients to groundbreaking studies. Respire Research specializes in placing the patient first, and is constantly adopting new and innovative practices to ensure clinical trial integrity and safety. JEHM currently works with doctors, patients, and clinical research sites in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and San Diego.
Outside of work, his hobbies and interests include technology and social media, salsa and Latin dancing, volunteering, traveling, and learning more about foreign cultures and their languages.
